Tolkien on the Somme

J.R.R. Tolkien served with the 11th Battalion, The Lancashire Fusiliers as a Signals Officer.

From July until October 1916 his battalion took part in the Battle of the Somme, an experience that had a lasting effect on his later famous works.

Tolkien on the Somme includes items from the museums collection which brings to life Tolkien’s experience with the Lancashire Fusiliers.

It also includes the short film ‘Tolkien’s Great War’ from Tolkien’s former school King Edwards as well as a dress up and colouring corner for the little ones to enjoy!
