Sir Lees Knowles Portrait

This is a painting of Sir Richard Lees Knowles MP, who was appointed Honorary Colonel of the 3rd Volunteer Battalion the Lancashire Fusiliers in 1899.  Following the Boer War, Knowles sought official recognition for the Regiment's role.  They were honoured with the award of the primrose hackle, the regimental motto of Omnia Audax (Audacious in Everything), the right to include the red Rose of Lancaster on the Regimental Colours and the construction of a monument on Chapel Street, Salford.
